Former Nez Perce County Commissioner Appointed to Idaho Board of Correction , January 20, 2010

BOISE – Governor C.L.“Butch” Otter has appointed former Nez Perce County Commissioner J. R. Van Tassel to the Idaho Board of Correction. He will serve a six-year term on the three-member, nonpartisan panel that oversees the Idaho Department of Correction.

“J.R. has a distinguished record of public service and will be a great addition to the board,” said Governor Otter. “He will help assure that the Department of Correction fulfills its mission of holding offenders accountable and keeping the people of Idaho safe.”

In addition to serving on the Nez Perce County Board of Commissioners for 13 years, Van Tassel served on the Lewiston City Council for seven years. Van Tassel was active in the Idaho Association of Counties (IAC) and served on an IAC task force that helped reform mental health care and substance abuse treatment delivery systems in the state.  In 2009, Van Tassel received IAC’s highest honor, the H. Sydney Duncombe Award. The award honors individuals for promoting the advancement and improvement of county government in Idaho.

I would like to thank the Governor for his confidence in allowing me this opportunity to serve the people of the State of Idaho.” Van Tassel said, “I look forward to joining an accomplished board and a great team at the Department of Correction.”

The current board members are Robin Sandy of Boise, who serves as chairman, and Jay Nielsen of Twin Falls, who serves as secretary.

By statute, only two members of the board can be members of the same political party. Van Tassel is a Democrat and fills the seat held by Carolyn Meline of Pocatello whose term on the board expired last year.

Van Tassel’s first meeting as a member of the board will be at 9:30 a.m. this Friday, January 22rd.  The meeting will be held at the Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections office at 954 W. Jefferson St. in Boise. As a cost-saving measure, Van Tassel will attend the meeting via a video link from Lewiston.
